Axel Cristales is a licensed professional counselor specializing in insomnia treatment using CBT-I. He has a Master's in Applied Psychology from Texas A&M University Commerce and has also seen many patients with anxiety, depression and trauma.
Axel's approach to therapy:
My role as a therapist is to help clients see themselves not through the lens of their mental illness or emotional struggles, but through the strength and resilience that empower them to overcome. It is a privilege to walk alongside people in their pain, their love, and their hope—to witness and honor the depth of their stories. The first step is always the hardest, but it can also be the most powerful. I hope that, when ready, you find the courage to begin. You owe it to yourself—and to those who care about you.
I am committed to providing you with a safe, judgment-free space where you can openly express your thoughts, emotions, and experiences. Here, you will always be met with active listening, empathy, and unconditional positive regard—support and acceptance. Beyond self-understanding, I will encourage you to take meaningful risks that foster growth and change.
Hope is what carries us forward. As a guide in your journey of healing and transformation, I look forward to working with you. If you're ready to take the first step, please don't hesitate to reach out— you've made it this far, why not go a little further?
Insomnia can mean taking an hour to fall asleep, waking at 3 a.m. or waking before your alarm and being unable to return to sleep. When this happens at least three nights a week for three months or more, it may be chronic insomnia. Early shifts, changing work hours and long commutes can make the pattern harder to break. CBT-I uses a sleep diary and weekly changes built around the schedule you actually have.
We are in network with Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Blue Cross Blue Shield (HMO plans), Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Advantage, Cigna / Evernorth, Medicare, UnitedHealthcare / Optum and UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage. We bill these as therapy visits, and your plan decides the amount you pay. We verify benefits before the first appointment, and self-pay is available if your plan is not listed.
The first session lasts about fifty minutes, by video or at Douglas Avenue. Your clinician asks about your current sleep, how long the problem has lasted and what you have already tried. If CBT-I is a good fit, you begin a short morning sleep diary. Your clinician uses it to set a sleep window: a consistent bedtime and wake time that changes as your sleep improves. Most courses include six to eight weekly sessions. See How It Works for the full process.
You need to be physically in Texas during each session. Elsewhere in the state? Read our pages for Houston and Austin, and statewide care across Texas.
A limited number of clinicians also see patients at 8300 Douglas Avenue, Dallas, TX 75225. Call (214) 216-2330. We confirm availability when you book.
Yes. CBT-I uses conversation, a short sleep diary and a sleep schedule that you adjust with your clinician each week. All of that can be done by video. You need a private place and a reliable internet connection. If you prefer an office visit, ask when you book and we will confirm current availability.
No. Most patients meet with us by video, so you can join from anywhere in the Dallas–Fort Worth area. You only need to travel to Douglas Avenue if you request an in-person visit and one is available.
Not for insomnia. A sleep study is an overnight test that measures breathing and movement; insomnia is diagnosed from your history and sleep pattern. Sleep apnea and insomnia often occur together. We treat the insomnia, we have partners who treat the apnea, and our clinician coordinates any referral that is needed.
